Having a winning mentality makes all the difference

What is your mindset prior to a game? It could be a league, cup or playoff game. How do you mentally prepare yourself before a game? Do you believe deep down inside that you’re going to win no matter the competition? In order to win more often, you need to have a winning mentality and believe deep down that you’ll win.

You might not be the top team in the league but a huge part of battle in soccer is the mental game. Don’t psych yourself out despite the competition…even if they are the better team on paper.

I know from personal experience that once I started to analyze every team in my league and break down their strengths/weaknesses I realized that my team stood a better chance of winning than more than half the teams in the league. Once we made certain player changes and added a few key pieces that were missing, we then moved from a mid-table team to a top three team in the league. The top teams are so equally matched in their abilities that the only differences came in depth of the squad come late in the season or overall team fitness. However, the key part in winning over the next best team was having that winning mentality.

And I would personally rather win than tie any game. Unless the coach instructs us to play for a tie (for instance, being a man down, only ten minutes left in a game and needing to hang on to a one-goal lead) I always have an offensive mentality and winning mentality.

A winning mentality is not about being cocky or arrogant. Instead, it is being believing deep down that you deserve to win and have the ability to win. If you’ve put in all the hard yards in pre-season and have the right pieces in place as a team (which these blogs on Goalden discuss) then there is no reason why not to have a winning mentality.

And remember, the ball is round and can bounce any way. Anything can happen in 90 minutes. Think positive and bring that winning mentality to the field everyday! Best of luck.
