People will say that mentors in life are important and I couldn’t agree more! There are many areas of my life to this day where mentors have helped me make decisions which impacted my future. In fact, I wish I had more mentors growing up who could have helped me in certain areas I had doubt or was unsure of myself.
This blog is to encourage soccer players of all ages to seek out soccer mentors. I encourage you to reach out to different people in the soccer community whom might genuinely have an interest in your life. These people are not competing against you but support your cause and the dreams you have in soccer.
A good place to start when looking for soccer mentors are people that are involved in the game for the love of the game. Remember that soccer mentors don’t necessarily have to be be better than you as a player. However, their experience in handling situations and giving advise can prove to very helpful. They can also inspire you. I was able to find soccer mentors in summer camps, my high school coach and older fans of my local club.
Other places you can look are closer to home including family such as brothers/sisters/cousins. It’s important to have a mentor who can provide an outside opinion and give feedback that you might not have thought of otherwise.
The key point with mentors is they are typically older and in a way you’re tapping into their experience and can learn from them. You do not necessarily need a lot of mentors but it is good to have a few. You can learn from each other and in time they’ll advise will carry over into other areas of your life. In the end, a soccer mentor is someone who can provide support, encouragement and guidance when you need it the most. This is something that you will appreciate now and down the road.
