In order for your club to have a successful season everybody needs to be aware of the goals are for the upcoming season.  Everybody needs to be on-board and working towards one common goal.  Follow these steps and your team will be realizing its goals.  

Step #1) Identify organization goals: the manager, owner, president, team coach, board members, committee or those other individuals who represent the club need to clearly identify what the short, medium and long term goals are.  Once these goals have been identified a plan needs to be put in place in order for them to happen.   

Organizations goals could include winning the league, playoffs, cups and or tournaments.  Winning all games and competitions would be ideal but some must take priority.  Everyone wants to win but the goals must be clear and specific.  Lots of people want to take a vacation but are never specific saying where they will travel, when, how it will happen and what they plan on doing today in order for it to happen.  Like the organizations goals they need to be crystal clear.  This way everyone can imagine it happening and become that much closer to reality.  Most importantly the organizations goals must be laid out before the season starts rather than midway through.

Step #2) Share organization goals with players: the players are the ones who will execute on the field but they need to have a goal and see the bigger picture as to what the club wants to achieve.  Having these goals in front of them will help motivate and give guidance to the team.  As opposed to just winning the game, they can look at the bigger picture and say this win will give us three points which puts us in first place and that much closer to winning the league.  When the players know what the organizations goals are from the beginning of the season it gets everyone on the same page.  Also, with the players knowing the teams goals there are then no surprises throughout the season.   

Step #3) Get players to agree to organization goals: the players must agree on the goals that are set forth by the organization.  Most importantly this must be discussed prior to the season.  Once again, it is important to have everyone on the same page.  If players do not agree on the goals then it is only a matter of time before things fall apart.  Not only will your team fall short of its goals but there could be problems within the team.  Within some teams the goals may not even be up for discussion.  Nevertheless, at the amateur level everyone needs to agree on the organizations goals.

Step #4) Have the players identify their individual goals: soccer is a team sport but I still recommend that players identify their individual goals for the season.  They do not need to share these goals with their team but having personal goals to strive for is also a great way to set yourself up for an improved season.  These goals could include starting all games, scoring x-amount of goals and producing x-amount of assists.  As a winger it could be to cross the ball into the 18-yard box ten times each half.  As a midfielder it could be to complete a certain number of passes per half or a certain percentage in passing.   As a defender it could to not let any forward beat you throughout the 90 minute game.  These are some examples although each of you will identify your own goals.  However, do not let your individual goals take priority over the teams’ success. 

Step #5) Take one step at a time:  you can only play one game at a time.  The bigger picture may be to win a tournament at the end of the season but it is best to concentrate on one game at a time.  In order to achieve that one big goal there may be several small steps that have to happen first.  Therefore concentrate on those steps one at a time.

Step #6) Sharpening the blade: the season is long and thus it is important to re-visit with the team the overall goals set-forth from the beginning.  Take the time to relax and reflect on where you are in the season.  Do changes need to be made within the team?  Do players need to be reminded of the goals?  Taking the analogy of an instrument, it must be constantly tuned in order to sound right.  No matter how good you may be at playing guitar, if you do not take the time to tune the guitar it will not sound right when played.  The same applies to the organizations goals.  Take the time to sharpen the blade so that you get the best results for your organization.
